"The best way to have the future you want is to create it"
If you want to level up in your farm business, please reach out. We are always looking to partner with those who want to be their best.
We believe the most dangerous phrase in business is: "We've always done it this way," - generally synonymous with, "if it isn't broke, don't fix it."
Our mantra is: "If it isn't broke, we are not looking hard enough."
Maverick Ag Ltd. was built to evolve the mindset of financial and business risk management in agriculture. We believe the next ten years in primary producer agriculture will change the landscape as we see it today. Farm sizes will continue to expand, risk management will be at the forefront, and raising capital will be imperative for future success.
Family farm businesses will be stronger than ever, when led by a team of advisers and strong corporate governance structure that is built around collaboration and not individualism. The truth is, "we don't know what we don't know." This is both exciting and fearsome.
We began at the Hebert Grain Ventures (HGV) Farm in Moosomin, SK. HGV created a strategic vision that was solely based on creation, adaptation, and adoption. The goal is to become the leader in human resources, financial management, risk management and technology adoption. The first step was trial and error, and the second was bringing the ideas to market. Maverick Ag was built to be the catalyst of new ideas and innovation to the industry.
Co-founder of Maverick Ag Ltd, and managing partner at Hebert Grain Ventures, Kristjan Hebert knew that keeping up with change in agriculture would be imperative for success. He made small 5% changes in every area of business. This led the expansion of the farming business into many additional service lines in agriculture. From a human resources technology start-up, to Maverick Ag Ltd, Kristjan continues to lead industry change in agriculture.
Co-founder and President of Maverick Ag Ltd, Evan Shout recognized an opportunity in agriculture in terms of financial and business risk management. After a decade working with large proactive farming operations at a national accounting firm in the agriculture niche, it was time to adjust the focus to outside the box thinking and away from day to day operations. With specialties that include private insurance, farm government programs, management and financial accounting, as well as running a family farm of his own, the move to Maverick Ag Ltd was the natural progression.
“If it’s not broke, you haven’t looked hard enough”
The competitive advantage of Maverick Ag Ltd is that we have no rules. There is no map that identifies the next ten years in agriculture and as such we can go, or do, anything. We were constructed on the premise that in order to keep up with agriculture we need to be out in front and not a follower.
Our largest asset is our team. Internally, between Maverick Ag Ltd and Hebert Grain Ventures, we have constructed a team that both believes the vision, lives the values and has the passion for the future of agriculture through our eyes. They each have been built to thrive using their own unique abilities and in turn, are an investment in both our business and ourselves.
The second key to success is our industry partners. Over the past decade, through our careers, we have constructed a team of industry partners and advisers that are at the forefront in agriculture in their fields. This ranges from the largest and most progressive farms in Western Canada to the top business advisers in their fields. We have strong relationships with some of the largest agriculture companies in terms of agronomy and technology, and this allows us to obtain a large wealth of knowledge in all areas of business.
Lastly, we have experience. Both co-founders have been involved in family-run farms from a young age, and know the blood, sweat, and tears that are involved with being a primary producer. Both have professional designations with the Institute of Chartered Professional Accountants of Saskatchewan, we are insurance licensed to act as agents and family enterprise advisors (FEA). These experiences and higher education have allowed us the opportunity to work with the best minds in agriculture, and as such we now are ready to leverage this knowledge to future agriculture endeavors.
Where We Are Going
There are no limits in agriculture. We have seen the changes in terms of mechanization, agronomic practices and technology and believe the speed of change is accelerating at an alarming rate. Maverick Ag Ltd plans to be at the forefront in terms of financial and business risk management, insurance and liability protection, data collection and analytics, and human resources.
Where we are going may not be the most important question, who we are going with maybe more imperative. The goal is to work with farms that see the future as we do and want to be proactive and not reactive to the unknown.
